Daegu Metropolitan City (DMC) announced that the Daegu Marathon, which is scheduled to be held in February 2025, was designated by World Athletics (WA) as a Gold Label road race.

The WA Gold Label is only awarded to a few of today’s approximately 1,100 marathons worldwide based on a stringent set of criteria (e.g. course characteristics, participating athletes).

The Daegu Marathon being named as a Gold Label race for 2025 is especially significant because, amid a significantly reduced number of Gold Label designations compared to 2024 (45->25), it is proof of its enhanced global status.

Applications for Daegu Marathon 2025 were planned to be accepted from September until January 3, 2025 but closed on December 12, having received 40,130 applications (Full Course: 13,023, Half Course: 6,924, 10K: 14,203, Healthy Running: 5,980).

In terms of region, 17,547 (44%) were submitted from Daegu, 22,268 (55%) from other areas of Korea, and 315 (0.8%) from other countries. In terms of applicant age, the largest proportion (11,803 (34%)) was submitted by those between 30 and 39. This was followed by 11,236 (28%) applicants in their 40s and 6,822 (17%) in their 20s.

To ensure that participants can operate under optimum conditions,* the date will be changed from the first Sunday of April to the following Sunday. The change is expected to motivate many marathoners, both amateur and professional, nationwide to come to Daegu.

* Optimum marathon temperature: 5~10 degrees Celsius

Mayor Hong Joon-pyo said, “The Daegu Marathon’s third consecutive WA Gold Label designation is all thanks to the support of Daegu’s residents. I hope next year’s race further solidifies Daegu’s reputation as a track-and-field city both in Korea and overseas.”
