The most important thing about fire is to put it out in the early stages, and a fire extinguisher is one of the best items of equipment to do so. It is also one of the easiest firefighting devices for people in a building to use in the event of a fire. Since a fire extinguisher is used in only one situation that may not occur, its importance is often forgotten and it is often neglected. However, emergencies are always sudden and when they occur, the last thing you want is for your extinguisher to fail because it hasn’t been taken care of.

Types of fire extinguishers

Powder fire extinguisher

This is the most widely used fire extinguisher in Korea, and the main component is powdered ammonium phosphate. The discharge agent is effective for all fires, including electric, as it removes oxygen and suppresses the combustion surface. The chemical properties of the powder fire extinguisher are different from those of other fire extinguishing agents, so they should not be mixed. Moisture-proof agents are added to keep the powder dry over a long period of time, and the container body is filled with compressed gas to discharge the powder agent. There are two types of powder fire extinguishers: the stored-pressure, which is where the compressed gas is sealed directly in the container body; and cartridge operated, where a separate container is filled with compressed gas and attached to the fire extinguisher body. This fire extinguisher is designed so that when the safety pin is removed and the handle is pressed, the seal is destroyed and the agent is discharged by the compressed gas.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher

Carbon dioxide is liquified and compressed under high pressure into a container. It is heavy and difficult to handle high-pressure gas. However, it is widely used for electric fires (Class C fires) because it is less contaminated by extinguishing agents and is highly insulated against electricity.

Halon fire extinguisher

This is a fire extinguisher with an agent made of halogen compounds, chloride, and methane. It is used for Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (electrical) fires. It leaves no trace after use and no damage to the area when released. However, it is expensive and recently its use has been regulated as a substance that destroys the ozone layer like freon, so its production has been greatly reduced.

How to use a fire extinguisher

  • Pull out the safety pin. Do not hold the handle down, as it will not work well.
  • Remove the hose from the hose hanger and hold it, pointing the end toward the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the handle as hard as you can as if you are using scissors.
  • Start at the bottom of the fire and work your way up to the top.
  • Release the handle when the fire is out. (The agent will stop releasing.)
  • 1Bring the extinguisher to the fire. Do not panic.
  • 2Pull out the safety pin on the fire extinguisher handle.
  • 3Pull out the hose and squeeze the handle toward the fire as hard as you can with your back to the wind (so the fire does not blow directly at you).
  • 4Spray evenly from around the base of the fire as if you were sweeping it with a broom.
