With proven strengths in the machinery, automobile, LCD display, mobile technology and IT-related sectors, the city of Daegu is poised to play a pivotal role in the development of convergence industries, connecting existing industries to new technologies. As the paradigm of global industry and economy continues to shift towards a knowledge-based economy, knowledge and technological innovations are emerging as critical factors of production rather than tangible assets. Recognizing these important changes, the Daegu Metropolitan Government is now focusing heavily on expanding its green energy, IT-BT-NT convergence, and technology sectors and plans to increase its investment in R&D to develop technologies in these sectors. By applying core technologies to high-tech industries, promoting R&D, and supporting businesses through the cultivation of skilled manpower, the city continues to create new growth engines for local industries. Fueled by new ideas, innovative technologies, and an indomitable spirit of creativity, Daegu is building a bright and prosperous future.

Electronic and information industry (mobile sector)

  • Goal
    to develop Daegu as a hub of the global mobile convergence industry
  • Strategy
    establish a cluster through the integration of whole processes (design, development, production, etc.), lay the groundwork for global research, operate a mobile international certification testing center, train manpower, and support efforts for Daegu to rise as a center of information production, distribution and consumption
  • Achievements
    • Strengthened global competitiveness of the mobile convergence industry (2010–2014)
      • Supported the development of innovative product technology and explored world markets
      • Established a system for sharing R&D equipment and equipment/systems for the purposes of international research, developed manpower and expanded convergence centers
    • Strengthened R&D for mobile convergence centers and created a comprehensive support system (2009–2012)
      • R&D, manpower cultivation, marketing, technological support
    • Commercialized IT convergence products using next-generation media (2010–2012)
      • Established equipment and testbeds for mobile broadcast convergence and supported prototype development
    • Supported R&D for IT convergence and product commercialization (2010–2014)
    • Implemented software industry promotion projects to solidify ICT Park’s role as the hub of the regional software industry (2011)
    • Hosted IICE (International IT Convergence Exhibition) to facilitate technology exchanges related to mobile parts, materials, software, telecommunications, solutions and services
    • Established the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Research Center for the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) within Daegu Technopolis to promote Daegu as an R&D hub for IT convergence in the region (2009–2012)

Bioindustry (healthcare)

  • Goal
    to further solidify Daegu’s reputation as a leader in the healthcare industry
  • Strategy
    connect with leading businesses specializing in functional materials and facilitate exchanges between the domestic and international communities to promote the regional bioindustry
  • Achievements
    • Strengthened the global competitiveness of the mobile convergence industry (2010–2014)
      • Developed technology for leading products and supported the industry, allowing domestic companies to penetrate global markets
      • Promoted the shared use of R&D equipment, increased the equipment and facilities available for international research, supported manpower development, and expanded convergence centers
    • Operated a bioindustry support center (2009–2012, investment of KRW 9.65 billion)
      • Established a network to produce health functional foods (HFF) in liquid form
      • Established a quality control system for health functional materials including functional biomaterials, new natural materials, and bio convergence material
      • Provided equipment for R&D through corporate support projects
      • Supported product licensing and the development of materials based on biomaterials used in oriental medicine
      • Assisted in the registration of intellectual property for developed products
      • Trained manpower in specialized fields
      • Supported the development of new biomaterial products, safety inspection and product standardization
    • Operated the Center for Food & Nutritional Genomics to promote technological development for the prevention of chronic diseases (2008–2015)
      • Supported the organization and categorization of researchers by sector
      • Studied technologies in the fields of nutrigenomics for the prevention of chronic dietary metabolic diseases
    • Promoted local foods with healing properties to produce high value-added agricultural processed foods (2010–2012)

Mechatronics sector (electronically controlled machines)

  • Goal
    to advance the city of Daegu as a hub of intelligent automotive and machinery parts marked by global competitiveness
  • Strategy
    establish a cluster of parts manufacturers through the convergence of cutting-edge technologies, establish a university-industry collaborative network, promote domestic and international collaborative research, and support other industrial sectors using nanotechnology
  • Achievements
    • Supported businesses for the enhancement of mechatronics technology such as intelligent production systems (2009–2012)
      • Supported R&D and prototype development, testing and evaluation and knowledge-based service education
    • Hosted the “Daegu International Automatic Machinery & Tools Exhibition” and “Materials, Parts & Components Exhibition” to promote information exchange and marketing in the robotics, automated systems and parts and materials sectors
    • Supported regional eco-innovation projects and international standard certifications to enforce strict industrial environmental regulations and trade barriers in advanced countries
    • Supported nanomaterials and technology development through the Nano Convergence Practical Application Center to enhance regional industries (2009–2012)
      • Provided equipment (nine kinds) and supported prototype production, analysis and reliability assessments
    • Established a platform for the commercialization of nanoconvergence technology developed by universities and research institutes (2010–2014)
      • Supported the commercialization and development of next generation thin film technologies
    • Operated a high-speed, high-precision mold making regional innovation center (RIC) (2003–2013) and strengthened the global competitiveness of the mold making industry (2010–2013)
