A unique “healing” festival where visitors can see and experience herbal medicine
The Daegu Yangnyeongsi Herbal Medicine Festival, which marked its 41st anniversary last year, has been selected as a Cultural Tourism Festival (Promising Festival) for 19 years in a row, starting from 2001. It has now become a representative herbal medicine festival in Korea.
2018 Daegu Yangnyeongsi Herbal Medicine Festival
□ The Daegu Yangnyeongsi Herbal Medicine Festival was officially selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism as one of Korea’s 41 Cultural Tourism Festivals, for being a form of healthy and aromatic entertainment, filled with the fragrance of herbal medicine. As a result of the designation, the festival will receive budget and promotional support in Korea and overseas through the Korea Tourism Organization.
□ Held in Yangnyeongsi, a city in Daegu with 360 years of long, proud history, the festival is a place where visitors can watch or participate in learning programs, or simply walk through old Yakjeon Alley where the festival is held.
○ The Yangnyeongsi Herbal Medicine Festival has received high praise and great reviews from past visitors and experts because, unlike many other herbal festivals, it focuses solely on traditional culture and hands-on experience programs related to herbal medicine, without inviting celebrities or staging fancy programs. Two of the main programs last year were the “Find Your Constitution” program, where visitors were examined by doctors of Korean traditional medicine to learn more about their body’s unique constitution and received herbal medicines specifically for their body type, and the “Herbal Medicine Healing Center” program, which provided physical examinations and free consultation services to visitors, as well as acupuncture and moxibustion therapy. Over 10,000 visitors received Korean medical services at the two booths, providing a great opportunity to spread the word about the excellence of Korean herbal medicine.
○ This year, the festival will be held from May 2 to 6. The traditional herbal medicine cutting competition will be increased in size to better share Korea’s traditional medicine culture, kept alive only in Yangnyeongsi, Daegu, with festival visitors. In addition, the festival will also use digital contents to appeal to younger audiences, expand programs to include the modern streets surrounding the regular festival site, and make greater efforts to attract foreign tourists.
○ To promote the globalization of the Yangnyeongsi brand, Daegu Metropolitan City plans to work in cooperation with Bozhou, Anhui Province, one of the major herbal medicine markets in China, as well as Osaka, Japan, the leading city in traditional Japanese medicine. The city is also planning to invite the two cities to this year’s Yangnyeongsi Herbal Medicine Festival.
□ Choi Un-baek, Director of Daegu’s Creative Economy Bureau, remarked, “The Yangnyeongsi Herbal Medicine Festival was selected as a Cultural Tourism Festival for the 19th year in a row thanks to the people’s interest in Korean medicine and their active participation in the festival. I am even gladder that the festival was selected as a Cultural Tourism Festival along with the Daegu Chimac Festival. This year, we will take another step toward becoming a premium festival with various programs where visitors can experience Korea’s traditional medicine culture and the excellence of Korean medicine. Moreover, we hope to work with surrounding tourism resources and attract foreign medical tourists and provide entertainment and enjoyment for local youths.”
